Originally written for Karan Johar’s friend Twinkle Khanna, the role of Tina Malhotra in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was rejected by multiple top actresses, including Twinkle Khanna, Aishwarya Rai, Karisma Kapoor, and Raveena Tandon before landing with newcomer Rani Mukerji, effectively transforming her into a Bollywood star.

Twinkle Khanna was the original inspiration for the character and the role was written with her in mind. She declined, calling the role 'weak' and joked years later that she jokingly'made Rani’s career' by refusing it.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was approached but turned down the role because, as a newcomer, she dreaded being typecast for just her looks. She later admitted she feared backlash, even saying she felt she 'would have been lynched' had she taken it.

After Twinkle Khanna and Aishwarya Rai, the role was offered to Karisma Kapoor, but she too passed; possibly due to the limited scope of the part for an established actress, leading Karan Johar to keep searching.

Raveena Tandon was also approached but declined the relatively brief role of Tina. She was reluctant to take on a part with limited screen time when she was already an established lead actress.
