Former U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed his plans to attend the state funeral of Jimmy Carter, the former U.S. president who passed away on Sunday at the age of 100. The funeral is scheduled for January 9 at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Trump announced a New Year’s Eve party held at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
When asked by a reporter if he had spoken to any members of the Carter family since Carter’s death, Trump declined to comment but stated, “We were invited.”
The lavish black-tie gala, attended by high-profile figures like billionaire tech CEO Elon Musk and Senator Ted Cruz, also saw Trump addressing other pressing political topics. One of the main issues discussed was the upcoming vote for the Speaker of the House. Trump reiterated his support for House Speaker Mike Johnson, expressing confidence in Johnson’s ability to secure re-election.
The vote, set to take place on Friday following the swearing-in of the new Congress, comes amidst uncertainty over Johnson’s standing within the Republican Party. In December, 34 Republicans voted against Johnson’s stopgap funding bill, raising doubts about his re-election prospects. However, Trump remains optimistic, stating, “I think they’ll support Speaker Johnson. He’s the one that can win right now. Almost everybody likes him.”
Trump also addressed questions regarding his stance on the H-1B visa program, which allows companies to bring skilled foreign workers to the U.S. Historically critical of the program, Trump recently sided with Elon Musk in defending it. Musk had called the program vital for importing top talent, sparking a public debate. Trump clarified his position, saying, “I didn’t change my mind. We need smart people coming into our country, and we need a lot of people coming in. We are going to have jobs like we’ve never had before.”
The event highlighted Trump’s influence in Republican politics as well as his ongoing role in shaping national discussions.
