Meet the founder of Apollo Hospitals who continues his work with dedication at 91, revolutionizing India’s healthcare with a legacy of vision, hard work, and humility.
Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, the founder of Apollo Hospitals, is 91 years old but continues to work with remarkable energy and dedication. Every day, he steps into his office in Chennai at 10 a.m. and works a full day until 5 p.m., maintaining a six-day workweek. His unwavering commitment to his work, even at such an advanced age, is truly inspiring.
Dr. Reddy's journey to becoming one of India's most influential business figures began in Chennai, where he completed his medical degree at Stanley Medical College. Later, he went to the United States to train as a cardiologist. However, a letter from his father in the early 1970s changed the course of his life. The letter urged him to return to India and make a difference in the country’s healthcare system.
This turning point was marked by a tragic event in 1979. Dr. Reddy learned about a patient in India who needed urgent cardiac surgery but couldn't afford to travel abroad for treatment. Unfortunately, the patient lost their life, which deeply affected Dr. Reddy. It also made him realize the lack of advanced medical care in India. This fueled his determination to bring world-class healthcare services to India. With support from the Indian government and then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Dr. Reddy founded Apollo Hospitals in Chennai in 1983, aiming to provide top-quality healthcare right within the country.
Since its inception, Apollo Hospitals has grown into a leader in the healthcare industry, with 71 hospitals, over 5,000 pharmacy outlets, and hundreds of clinics across India. The company also has a market capitalization exceeding Rs 70,000 crore. Dr. Reddy’s family remains actively involved in the business, with his four daughters, Preetha, Suneeta, Shobana, and Sangita—playing important roles in its management. Furthermore, Dr. Reddy is preparing the third generation of his family to take leadership roles, as nine of his ten grandchildren are already engaged in the business.
Despite his immense success, Dr. Reddy remains humble. He believes that success should not only be about personal achievements but should inspire one to do more for the nation. His story reflects not only his dedication to transforming healthcare in India but also his genuine care for the country’s well-being. Dr. Reddy’s legacy is seen in the hospitals he founded and the many lives he has touched, serving as a shining example of hard work, vision, and humility.
