Hiroto Kiritani, a 75-year-old millionaire from Japan, has surprised the internet with his incredibly frugal lifestyle. Despite earning hundreds of millions of yen from the stock market, Kiritani lives a simple life by using coupons and freebies. His approach to saving money has earned him the nickname “God of Freebies.”

Kiritani’s wealth comes from owning stocks in more than 1,000 companies, with a net worth exceeding 100 million yen (around Rs 5.29 million). By mid-2024, his fortune had grown to nearly 600 million yen (Rs 315.4 million), as reported by the South China Morning Post.

Interestingly, Kiritani began his career as a professional shogi player, a Japanese form of chess. His skill in the game opened doors for him to teach at a securities firm, where he first became interested in the stock market. Through careful observation and quick learning, he earned his first 100 million yen in trading.

However, a major setback in 2008 changed his outlook on money. He lost 200 million yen in the stock market crash, which motivated him to adopt a strict, thrifty lifestyle. From then on, he focused on saving and collecting coupons and shareholder perks from over 1,000 companies, ranging from food and clothing to entertainment.

Today, Kiritani’s daily routine revolves around making the most of his coupons. He rides his coupon-bought bicycle through Tokyo, visiting restaurants to redeem free meals before the coupons expire. His thrifty habits extend to free gym memberships, sauna sessions, karaoke nights, and even bungee jumping, simply because they are free.

Kiritani also receives over 300 free movie tickets every year and watches at least 140 films annually, even if he isn’t interested in the movies. For him, the theater seats are perfect for napping.

His philosophy is simple: “Letting coupons expire is shameful.” This belief drives him to maximize every opportunity to save. In addition to his unique lifestyle, Kiritani has written books and appeared on television to share tips on thrifty living, inspiring younger generations to value resources and live smartly.
