India's new e-passport: How to apply, key benefits, everything you need to know

On Passport Seva Divas, June 24, 2025, Dr. S. Jaishankar announced the nationwide launch of e-passports under the Passport Seva Programme (PSP) 2.0. Initially tested in select cities, e-passports are now being launched across India to support Digital India and improve citizen services for travellers.

An e-passport is embedded with a secure RFID chip that stores biometric data like fingerprints and photographs. It allows contactless, machine-readable verification at immigration, boosting both efficiency and security during travel while meeting global ICAO standards.

To apply, visit the Passport Seva website, register or log in, fill out the e-passport application, and schedule an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra or POPSK. After paying the fee online, applicants must visit the centre for biometric data and document verification.

E-passports enhance security through biometric data, making fabrication nearly impossible. They speed up immigration with contactless scans, ensure global recognition for smoother travel, and support automated border control infrastructure in India. The system modernises travel documentation and boosts efficiency for Indian passport holders.

The e-passport launch is supported by the mPassport Police App, which has reduced police verification time. Currently, for new applicants, existing passport holders may soon get upgrade options, making e-passports a key part of India’s digital future.
