Kolkata doctor rape-murder case: 'Even if the court says hang him...', says guilty Sanjay Roy's mother

Soon after his conviction in the Kolkata doctor rape-murder case, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy's mother, Malati Roy, affirmed that she would accept the punishment given to her son by the Sealdah sessions court. 

The Sealdah sessions court, on Saturday, found Sanjay Roy guilty in the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, which had led to a nationwide outrage back in August, 2024. 

Roy used to work as a civic volunteer at RG Kar Medical College. He was apprehended a day after the incident, after his bluetooth headset was found on the incident spot. 

In a conversation with The Indian Express, Malati Roy highlighted that she could understand the pain that the victim's parents went through, given she herself is a mother to three daughters. 

“I have three daughters, I understand their (the victim’s parents) pain. … Let him get any punishment he deserves. Even if the court says hang him, I will accept it", Roy says. 

She furher adds, "However I believe he cannot have done it alone. They say he was even drunk."

Throwing light on her family's plight since her brother's arrest, Sabita continued, "Since the day my brother was arrested. Didn’t step out of home. People are talking so much bad things about our family in my neighbourhood. Every Saturday I used to go to a local temple. I have stopped that too."

Punishment to be pronounced tomorrow 

The Sealdah sessions court will pronounce the punishment for guilty Sanjay Roy tomorrow, i.e., January 20. 

After the court gave its verdict, declaring Roy guilty, the deceased victim's parents broke down before the judge, thanking him for bringing justice to their daughter. 

However, Sanjay Roy claimed before the court that he was being "falsely implicated" in the case. "I have been falsely implicated. I have not done this. Those who have done so are being let go. One IPS involved," he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

The judge stated that he would be heard on Monday, i.e., the day of pronouncing the punishments for the guilty.
