India ready to repatriate 18,000 illegal migrants from US to placate Trump

India's government is actively engaging with the Trump administration to address illegal migration, with plans to repatriate around 18,000 Indian nationals from the United States. This effort comes as part of India’s strategy to avoid potential trade conflict with the incoming US president and maintain vital legal immigration channels, including student and H-1B visas.

The collaboration highlights a growing focus on illegal migration, a key issue for Trump, who has pledged to curb unauthorized crossings. The US has identified about 220,000 unauthorized Indian immigrants as of 2022, with rising numbers in recent years, especially at the northern border.

The Indian government has signed migration agreements with several countries to manage its citizens' overseas labor mobility, which could be at risk if the repatriation efforts are not upheld. India's cooperation is seen as essential for securing trade relations and ensuring continued access to the US immigration system, where Indian citizens represent a significant portion of H-1B visa holders.

As part of this cooperation, India recently facilitated the deportation of over 100 Indian nationals through a chartered flight, with more such efforts expected. This cooperation is also linked to India's goal of addressing overseas secessionist movements, including the Khalistan movement, which some believe is supported by illegal migrants.

While the US has expressed concerns over India’s high import taxes, a trade war remains a concern for Prime Minister Modi's government. Trump’s focus on border issues may heighten the urgency of these discussions, as both countries seek to balance migration policy and trade relations.
