India's biggest flop of 2024 will now compete for Best Picture at Oscars 2025; not Baby John, Maidaan, Indian 2, Jigra

Ahead of the Oscars 2025 in March, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the list of 323 films eligible to compete at the 97th Academy Awards across several categories. A separate list of 207 films has also been released, which are the contenders to win the Best Picture at the prestigious event.

Out of these 207 films, there are six Indian movies in the list too - Aadujeevitham or The Goat Life, Santosh, Putul, Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, All We Imagine as Light, Kanguva, and Girls Will Be Girls. The most surprsing entry is the pan-India Tamil period actioner Kanguva, which was released in cinemas in November 2024.

Headlined by Suriya and helmed by Siva, Kanguva was made at a massive cost of around Rs 350 crore. However, its poor direction and predictable storyline failed to attract the audiences to the theaters and the movie bombed at the box office. With the net domestic collections of around Rs 70 crore and gross worldwide earnings of Rs 106 crore, Kanguva turned out to the biggest Indian flop of 2024. The film also starred Bobby Deol as the villain and Disha Patani as the leading lady.

The voting for nominations for the Oscars 2025 will begin on January 8 and conclude on January 12. The final list of nominations will be announced on January 17, and the 97th Academy Awards are set to take place on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, United States.

Though Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao's Laapataa Ladies failed to make the shortlist in the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars 2025, India still has chances of win at the upcoming Academy Awards. Guneet Monga's production Anuja has been shortlisted in the Best Live Action Short Film category. Also, Payal Kapadia's All We Imagine As Light is expected to grab a few nominations at the 97th Academy Awards after its stunning award-winning run at the international film awards.
