EDUCATION
Malaysia is becoming an increasingly popular study destination, offering affordable tuition and living costs, with significant growth in Indian student applications.
Malaysia is quickly becoming one of the top destinations for international students, attracting learners from around the world with its affordable cost of living, lower tuition fees, and highly ranked universities. The country's appeal as a study-abroad option has grown significantly in recent years, thanks to its eight universities being ranked among the top 500 in the 2025 QS World University Rankings. This recognition reflects the quality of education Malaysia offers to international students.
One of the biggest advantages of studying in Malaysia is the affordability. Compared to other popular study-abroad destinations, Malaysia is significantly cheaper. It is estimated that living in Malaysia costs about two-thirds less than in the US, and half as much as in countries like Canada and Ireland. This affordability makes it an attractive option for students looking to manage their budgets while pursuing higher education. Additionally, the average tuition fee for an undergraduate degree is about USD6,000 annually, which is quite reasonable compared to other countries.
India has become one of Malaysia's key markets for international students. In 2023, Indian students ranked fifth among the top contributors, with 1,900 applications submitted. This marks an 18% increase compared to the previous year, showing a growing trend of Indian students choosing Malaysia for their higher education. The Malaysian government has also implemented a selective approach to post-study work policies. In 2023, students from 23 countries, including the US, the UK, Germany, and India, became eligible for a 12-month Graduate Pass, allowing them to stay in Malaysia after completing their studies for work purposes. This policy, initially set to expire in 2024, has been extended until 2026, encouraging more students to consider Malaysia as their study destination.
Malaysia’s popularity is also reflected in the increased global interest in its institutions. Reports show that Malaysia’s share of global page views on platforms like Studyportals has increased by around 25% this year, with significant interest coming from the US, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Furthermore, there has been significant growth in postgraduate and master's level programs since 2019, as more students are seeking advanced degrees in Malaysia.
By adopting forward-thinking strategies, Malaysian institutions are reshaping academic power and contributing to the global flow of talent and research, potentially influencing the international education landscape for years to come.
