Jasprit Bumrah eyes Kapil Dev's elite record during India vs Australia Boxing Day Test

India is gearing up to face Australia in the 4th match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, set to take place on Boxing Day at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on December 26. 

All eyes will be on Jasprit Bumrah, the star fast bowler who has been a standout performer for India in the series thus far. If Bumrah delivers another stellar performance in the upcoming Boxing Day Test, he will achieve a significant milestone that no Indian pacer has accomplished before.

Currently, Jasprit Bumrah has 194 wickets in 43 Test Matches. If he manages to take 6 wickets across the two innings in the fourth Test against Australia, he will reach the milestone of 200 wickets in his 44th Test Match. This achievement would make him the first Indian pacer to reach 200 Test wickets before playing his 50th match, surpassing the record set by Kapil Dev, who achieved the feat in his 50th Test.

Bumrah has been the standout performer for India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024, having picked up an impressive 21 wickets in just three matches, making him the leading wicket-taker of the series. In the third Test, Bumrah showcased his prowess by taking 9 wickets, including a remarkable 6-wicket haul in the first innings. With this performance, he has already surpassed Kapil Dev to become the Indian bowler with the most wickets in Tests on Australian soil.

Jasprit Bumrah has ascended to the pinnacle of the ICC Test Bowlers rankings, currently boasting a tally of 904 ranking points. This achievement places him on par with Ravichandran Ashwin, who reached the same number of points in 2016 when he held the title of World No.1 bowler. 

Should Bumrah deliver a stellar performance in the upcoming fourth Test, he stands poised to surpass Ashwin's impressive tally and etch his name in ICC Rankings history as the highest-ranking Indian player.
