India suffered back-to-back series defeats at home against New Zealand and during their tour to Australia. Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma received criticism for their poor performances with the bat.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar will meet the officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) with the latter keeping their talks with the board officials as a prelude to a detailed discussion at the same venue on the performance put in by India in the recently concluded five-match Test series against Australia. According to news agency PTI, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma issues will form the core discussion.
Rohit and Kohli are India's top run-scorers in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC). However, they haven't been at their best for the last two Test series played against New Zealand and Australia. For example, Rohit has scored just 122 runs in his last six Tests for India, while he could manage only 31 runs in five innings against Australia. At the other end, Kohli has added 283 in his last eight five-day encounters.
He scored a century in the second innings of the first Test against Australia in Perth. But there were eight dismissals in the same manner during the gruelling tour Down Under raising more question about his technique.
PTI reported that key decision-makers will sit together to decide the future course of action. They will discuss whether to flip the transition switch during the Champions Trophy or wait for the end of the cycle with the ICC's flagship event. The senior batsmen are likely to get another opportunity to shine in the ODI Champions Trophy, which is a format where they have always been successful.
The panel will also consider the very few ODIs that Kohli and Rohit will feature in 2024 after playing the 2023 World Cup at home. The sample size is small, and thus it may not have enough data to make a judgment on their futures in 50-over cricket.
Kohli and Rohit had different levels of success in the series against Sri Lanka. Kohli scored 24, 14, and 20 in Colombo, and Rohit scored 58, 64, and 35 against the Lankans. Kohli has regularly excelled in the 50-over format, which is his strength. A solid performance in the Champions Trophy may help both him and Rohit rebuild their confidence.
Looking ahead, their Test prospects look to be diverging. The next five-match series against England will be a key test for both players, as selectors assess their recent performances in the longer format.
Gambhir's thoughts into Kohli and Rohit's Test cricket commitment will be sought. Additionally, Gambhir's coaching staff will be rated on their ability to navigate.
