South Africa triumphed over Afghanistan in an exciting match 3 of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at the National Stadium in Karachi on Friday, February 21. After a lackluster showing in the ODI Tri-Series 2025, South Africa kicked off their Champions Trophy journey on a positive note, delivering an impressive all-round performance. This match was the start of Group B in the tournament.
The Proteas bowled Afghanistan out for 208 runs in 43.3 overs, with Kagiso Rabada standing out by dismissing Rahmat Shah, who scored 90 runs. Despite Rahmat's solid innings, which included nine fours and a six, no other batsman could reach 20 runs.
Rabada was the star bowler for his team, taking three wickets for just 36 runs in 8.3 overs. Lungi Ngidi and Wiaan Mulder also played key roles, each claiming two wickets, while Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj added one wicket apiece.
Choosing to bat first, South Africa set a strong total of 315/6 in their 50 overs, highlighted by a brilliant century from Ryan Rickelton. Rickelton's innings of 103 runs, featuring seven fours and a six, was crucial in leading his team to victory. Captain Temba Bavuma (58), Rassie van der Dussen (52), and Aiden Markram (52*) also contributed significantly with their half-centuries.
Next, South Africa will face Australia in Rawalpindi on February 25, while Afghanistan is set to play against England on February 26 in Lahore.
