India vs England, 4th Test Day 2: Day 2 of the 4th Test between India and England is underway at Old Trafford, Manchester. India resumes their first innings at 264/4, with Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur at the crease, looking to build on Sai Sudharsan's impressive 61. However, a major concern for India is the injury to Rishabh Pant, who retired hurt on Day 1 with a toe fracture and is likely ruled out for the remainder of the series. England, trailing 2-1 in the series, will be keen to make early inroads and capitalize on India's middle-order uncertainty, with skipper Ben Stokes leading the charge with the ball. Rain is a possibility early on Day 2, but clearer skies are expected later in the day.
Earlier, Ben Stokes won the toss and chose to bowl first on a relatively flat wicket. Although Chris Woakes bowled a splendid spell and took a wicket, it was the captain himself, similar to his performance at Lord’s, who altered the game's trajectory throughout the day by claiming two vital wickets. The first was captain Shubman Gill, followed by Sai Sudharsan later in the day.
India has made three alterations to their lineup, bringing in Sai Sudharsan, Shardul Thakur, and Anshul Kamboj to replace Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Akash Deep. On the England side, they had to substitute the injured Shoaib Bashir with Liam Dawson.
Bumrah appealed loudly for a catch behind the stumps, and there was a lot of noise around the incident. The umpire decided not to give it out. The Indian players talked about it but chose not to take a review. It turned out to be a good decision because there was no contact with the bat.
Duckett is out for 94 after getting a faint edge to the keeper. Kamboj has taken his first Test wicket. Joe Root has come in and scored a single, while Pope has hit a ball that Shardul stopped but, upon review, it turned out to be a four as he touched the boundary line.
Duckett plays a reverse sweep against Jadeja, resulting in one run as there is a deep third man fielder. Crawley gets a single through point, and Duckett adds another run with a sweep to deep square leg. Crawley then sweeps for a four between deep square leg and midwicket, which is a no ball. However, the extra delivery leads to a wicket for India as Jadeja successfully breaks the partnership, getting Crawley to edge the ball to slip. Crawley scored 84 runs off 113 balls.
Ravindra Jadeja is bowling. Crawley hits a six by stepping out and sending the ball over long on. He then scores a four with a ramp sweep to fine leg. There are four byes as Jadeja delivers a flat ball that drifts down leg, missing the batter, the keeper, and the leg slip. Jadeja also bowls a no ball in the over, contributing to a total of 15 runs scored in that over.
Bumrah gives away a boundary to Crawley, who hits it to square leg. Duckett scores his 15th Test fifty with a couple of runs off Shardul. Duckett then hits a length ball through covers for a boundary, which marks a 100-run partnership.
Crawley hits a shot to fine leg for four runs and follows up with a nice cover drive for another four. He has a few inside edges, and when a ball nips back, he doesn’t play a shot and gets hit on the back foot. The umpire says it’s not out, but India reviews. The decision shows wickets missing, so it's called not out. Eight runs were scored in that over.

Crawley gets hit on the fingers but still manages to run for a single. England is scoring runs, while Indian bowlers struggle to make the ball move. Crawley hits a drive toward cover, and despite Anshul's effort in the deep, Crawley scores four runs.
Duckett is facing Bumrah for the first time. He hits a delivery on the pads towards square leg for four runs. Then, he takes another delivery down the leg and places it towards fine leg for another four runs. The bowling from India has been ordinary so far, with Duckett scoring nine runs in the over.
Anshul Kamboj is making his debut. Duckett almost gets out hit wicket as his bat flies over the stumps. He also gets a faint edge that goes to fine leg. Duckett ends the over with two boundaries towards square leg. His start in Test cricket isn’t strong.
Jasprit Bumrah will start with the new ball. England's openers are Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett. Crawley faces Bumrah's first ball but leaves it. He does the same with the next delivery. Bumrah keeps pitching the ball at the fourth stump line. Crawley finally tries to play a drive but misses, resulting in a maiden over.
Joe Root makes an impressive use of the DRS as Bumrah tries to hit a wild shot off Archer. Initially, no one pays attention until Root signals to Stokes to review. A small touch from Bumrah's glove is detected, leading to Archer's third wicket. Bumrah scores 4 runs off 7 balls before being out.
Stokes bowled a full toss to Pant, who pulled it for a single due to an injury. Washington Sundar got out while attempting to hook a bouncer, caught at deep fine leg, giving Stokes his fifth wicket. Anshul Kamboj came in next but was dismissed for a duck, caught by the keeper off a delivery from Stokes. Jasprit Bumrah is the next player at bat.
Archer bowls to Washington, asking for a leg before wicket. The delivery pitches outside off, angles in, and then moves away, hitting the back pad. The ball tracker shows the impact is umpire’s call, so Washington is saved from being out. This is a maiden over.
Carse runs towards the point and must jog faster to reach the non-strikers’ end. Sundar gives the strike back to Pant. On the last ball, Pant swings wildly but misses, resulting in a no ball, adding four runs. Play is stopped due to rain just after the over ends, with 10 minutes left until lunch. Lunch has now been taken.
Shardul has been dismissed after a great catch by Duckett at gully. He played well, scoring 41 runs off 88 balls. Rishabh Pant has come in and is met with loud applause. He is currently not out at 37 runs and was beaten by the first ball he faced.
Ben Stokes is bowling now. England has asked for a review for caught behind after a ball jumps off a length and there is a sound as it passes Shardul’s defense. However, UltraEdge shows it hit the shoulder, not the bat, and England loses their second review. Then, Shardul responds by hitting a full and wide ball for four through covers.
Archer bowls to Jadeja, creating threats with movement but initially fails to take a catch. India scores its first run with a single through midwicket. Shardul plays a risky shot but avoids a wicket. However, Archer eventually dismisses Jadeja, who edges the ball to second slip, where Harry Brook catches it.
Rishabh Pant, the wicketkeeper for India, sustained a toe fracture during the Manchester Test and has been recommended to rest for six weeks, which means he will miss the rest of the current series against England. The injury happened when he tried a reverse sweep and was struck on his right foot. While the team management is considering the slight chance of him batting with pain relief if necessary, he is presently unable to walk unaided. Ishan Kishan is anticipated to be summoned as his substitute for the forthcoming fifth Test.
