IND vs ENG 2nd Test Day 4: Stay updated with all the live coverage from Day 4 of the India vs England Test in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy taking place at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
After dismissing England for 407 in their first innings and extending their lead to 244 with a score of 64/1 in their second innings, India aims to accumulate quick runs on Day 4 of the second Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Saturday to enhance their chances of a realistic victory. With KL Rahul (34) and Karun Nair (2) at the crease, the visitors will strive to consolidate today to establish a decisive target.
England’s resurgence was spearheaded by Harry Brook (158) and Jamie Smith (184*), who formed a resilient 303-run partnership, marking the highest sixth-wicket partnership for England against India in Test matches. However, once Akash Deep made a breakthrough by dismissing Brook with the new ball, England's innings crumbled. Akash Deep (4/98) and Mohammed Siraj (6/119) tore through the lower order, limiting England’s response to 180 runs short of India’s first-innings total of 587.
India’s openers quickly built a 50-run partnership before Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed late in the day. With a substantial lead and two days remaining, India will be eager to capitalize on this advantage, as the Test appears to be heading towards a thrilling conclusion.
Pope hits a four after edging a ball from Akash, who tries to get him to play a flick shot. The ball seams and passes the gully fielder. Later, a loose delivery on his pads helps Pope score another four as it rolls to fine leg.
Akash starts the second innings by taking a wicket. Duckett thinks the ball will move away since Akash bowls from around the wicket. However, Akash surprises left-handed batsmen by bringing the ball in. Duckett has to change his stance at the last moment, resulting in him getting an inside edge that hits the stumps.
India has a 607-run lead, setting the stage for a potential record chase for England if they choose to attempt it. Key performances include Gill with 161 runs, Pant with 65, Jadeja with an unbeaten 68, and Rahul with 55. India aims to secure at least two wickets to strengthen their chances of winning, but the pitch remains favorable for batting, allowing England the option to play for a draw.
Gill hits a six and then scores four runs with a short shot. He gets another four through the covers and makes room to cut it away, earning a single. Jadeja is now on strike, and the team's lead is over 500 runs, with 18 runs scored in that over.
Gill hits a short ball, pulling it over fine leg for a six. He then creates space and pulls another ball over mid on for four runs. A controlled pull and a misfield by the deep midwicket fielder adds another four runs. The over totals 14 runs.
India scored 113 runs in this session but lost 2 wickets. The team is focused on scoring quickly to set a strong target for England in the fourth innings. KL Rahul made a fifty, but the weather conditions affected his play. Karun Nair was also dismissed by Josh Tongue. Rishabh Pant's aggressive batting helped India regain momentum, as he remains unbeaten on 41 runs off 35 balls, with Shubman Gill supporting him with 24 runs. India's lead is now 357 runs, and they are likely to continue batting at this pace for one more session before challenging England.
Bashir bowls to Pant, who successfully defends the first delivery. The second delivery is outside off, but it stays low and Pant misses his sweep shot. Pant scores a single off the third delivery, followed by Gill who takes one through midwicket. Pant adds another run to his score through the on side.
Stokes is bowling while Gill is batting. Gill hits a short ball through third man for a boundary. He then takes a single to fine leg. Later, Pant attempts a shot but doesn’t hit it high enough. The ball goes to Crawley, who tries to catch it but drops it.
Rahul has been dismissed by Tongue, who bowled a delivery that angled in and hit the stumps after Rahul tried to play a flick. Rahul scored 55 runs off 84 balls. Rishabh Pant is the new batsman, and England positions two fielders close in and a short mid-on. Pant quickly scores a four by pulling a short ball to fine leg and then hits a six over long off after stepping out to Tongue.
Gill hits the ball to the block hole and digs it out for a single. Rahul defends the second ball and quickly runs for another single. Gill gets another run with a soft push through to covers. Rahul scores his 18th Test half-century with a drive through mid-off for three runs. Gill hits a full and wide ball, driving it through covers for four runs while posing for the cameras.
Nair hits the ball with a flick to fine leg for four runs and then follows it with a nice cover drive for another four. However, Nair is out after trying to drive a tempting pitch again, resulting in an outside edge caught by the keeper. He scores 26 runs.
Rahul hit a beautiful cover drive for four runs. There was an appeal for LBW against him, but England chose not to review the decision. Rahul then edged the ball, which went past the fielders for another four runs. The over was eventful, with a total of eight runs scored.
India has a 244-run lead with two days of play remaining on a flat pitch. The team aims to increase the lead to nearly 500 runs, which would compel England to attempt a win, while still keeping it manageable for their bowlers on day five. KL Rahul and two other batsmen need to score significant runs, and Pant's aggressive batting will be crucial. England, on the other hand, hopes to bowl India out in under two and a half sessions and chase no more than 450 runs.
