India's biggest flop was made on Rs 600 crore, left public furious, director went underground, film lost Rs 300 crore

Hits and flops are part and parcel of the film industry. But many times a movie leaves an unforgettable mark. There are instances when a movie flops so badly that it becomes an example of how one should not make such a film. Such epic disappointments often end the careers of artistes associated with the film, and even leave producers bankrupt. Today we will discuss one such film that has earned the title of a disgrace for a lifetime. 

Adipursh: The epic disaster of Indian cinema

When you have a pan-India star like Prabhas, a director who made the National Award-winning blockbuster Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, and the project is backed by India's top production house: T-Series, the expectations are sky-limit. However, when Adipurush's teaser was dropped, the audience understood that the movie would be a sub-standard product, and the makers were trying to cash in on the beliefs of the audience. Adipurush is based on the Indian epic Ramayana, but the cinematic adaptation was a disgrace to the source material.

Adipurush budget

As per several news reports, the budget of Adipurush is between Rs 500-700 crores. During the film's release, several X (formerly Twitter) users joked that Adipursh's budget was more than Chandrayaan project, and still, they got a film which was painful to watch. 

Adipurush box office collection

Adipurush was released in cinemas on June 16, 2023. The film opened on a strong note, thanks to the anticipation, and Prabhas' fan following. However, the negative word-of-mouth impacted the film severely. The cringe, offensive dialogues, the liberty taken by the makers irked the audience so much, that they started trolling the film on social media. Writer and lyricist Manoj Muntashir appeared on several TV news channels, justifying their take on the liberties. 

The film collected money with a downfall trend, and despite the makers rectifying the offensive dialogues, the film could never revive at the box office, ending the collection at Rs 393 crores (as per Sacnilk). After the massive failure of Adipursh, director Om Raut went underground, and the producer suffered a loss of more than Rs 300 crores. Thankfully, they had a relief with the release  of Animal, that became a raging blockbuster.
