Emergency Box Office Day 5: Kangana Ranaut's political drama struggles to stay afloat amid Punjab ban

Kangana Ranaut's political drama Emergency has been underperforming despite a decent opening. The film's collections have plummeted significantly since its release, and it's failing to regain momentum even after five days. The ban imposed on the film in Punjab may have compounded its poor performance.

The film's box office collections took a hit on Monday, January 20, with a significant dip in earnings. Despite this, the film has managed to cross the Rs 10 crore mark in India over the last four days. However, it still has a long way to go to reach the break-even point. As per industry tracker Sacnilk, the film has earned an estimated Rs 11.40 Cr India net, adding Rs 0.17 Cr on its fifth day as of now. 

Emergency has been banned in Punjab due to alleged misrepresentation of the Sikh community, sparking widespread protests outside theatres in the state. In response, Kangana shared a video message thanking fans for their support and addressing the controversy. She urged viewers to watch the film and form their own opinion, saying, "Decide for yourself if it unites us or breaks us."

Emergency box office performance plays a crucial role in Kangana’s career in Bollywood. The actress is currently experiencing a slump in her career, with no major hits in over a decade. Her last blockbuster film was Tanu Weds Manu Returns in 2015, which remains one of her most successful movies to date. Films like Tejas and Dhaakad have significantly dented Kangana Ranaut's box-office credibility and bankability.

Emergency is Kangana’s first movie as a solo director. Before this, she co-directed Manikarnia: The Queen of Jhansi in 2019. Backed by Zee Studios and Manikarnia Films, the film also stars well-known actors like Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and Milind Soman. The film is currently competing with another new film called Azaad, starring Ajay Devgn, Rasha Thadani and Aaman Devgan.
